The 84th Annual ISA Conference and Trade Show kicked off July 26 in St. Louis. The weekend featured the International Tree Climbing Championships at Forest Park, and Monday morning started strong with a keynote address by Dr. Stephen Sillett, professor, Department of Forestry and Wildland Resources, Humboldt University, Arcata, Calif. Dr. Sillett’s presentation detailed the work he and his team have done measuring the structural dimensions of tall tree growth, and their amazing findings on Sequoia sempervirens and Eucalyptus regnans. The data were used to develop 3-D models of tree crowns to accurately estimate total amounts of bark, wood, cambium and leaves. Dr. Sillett’s team was even able to develop a system to determine the age of these massive trees — including one specimen that is estimated to be more than 1,800 years old.
