Tree care industry programs to be offered at Empire State Green Industry Show

The Empire State Green Industry Show will be held January 11 – 13, 2011 at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center, Rochester, New York. Many programs and educational sessions have been planned for tree care professionals:

Tree Biology

Featured speaker, Joseph Murray, will review the environmental signals that influence physiological activities and provide a better understanding of how pruning influences tree biology.  He will also discuss the biology behind trees and turf and what happens when they try to grow together in a typical urban landscape.

Dr. George Hudler, Cornell University, will discuss inherent tree defense reactions and how the environment affects trees.

Emerald Ash Borer/Tree Injection

Mark Whitmore, Cornell University, will present a history of the Emerald Ash Borer and discuss basic biology, detection and control options.

Rob Gorden, Arborjet, Inc. will discuss environmentally sound treatment options against the Emerald Ash Borer and specific trunk injection technologies.    He will also demonstrate Arborjet trunk injection systems during the round table discussion that he is facilitating.

William Snyder, ArborSystems, will discuss the use of micro-injection to prevent Emerald Ash Borer infestation while minimizing the risk of tree injury.

James Rollins, Mauget, Inc. will provide information on macro-infusion, micro-injection and micro-infusion of trees.  He’ll also discuss optimal timing and proper techniques.

Disease Management

Brian Eshenaur, Cornell University Extension, NYS IPM Program, will present, “Diagnosing Dieback Problems of Trees and Shrubs.”  Participants will learn how to recognize common pest problems, the pesticides used to control disease and insects, and the cultural causes of dieback in the landscape.  He will also facilitate a round table discussion on what tree and shrub disease problems can be expected in the 2011 growing season.

Walter Nelson, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County, will provide economically and environmentally sound solutions to ornamental pest, disease and weed management for the 2011 season.

Utility

Dave Krause, Arborchem Products Co., will present information on integrated vegetation management, application techniques, herbicide mixture options, and the importance of a quality assurance program.  He will also facilitate a round table discussion on the impact of the Clean Water Act on arboriculture and vegetation management.

Mark Rice, DuPont Land Use Management, will present the factors that affect herbicides used for utility right-of-way vegetation management.  He will also review sprayer performance, nozzles and calibration, and proper coverage for different application methods.
