Oregon Community Trees honors Art Anderson for urban forestry leadership

Art Anderson, general manager of J. Frank Schmidt & Son Co., was presented the 2013 Oregon Community Trees President’s Award, in recognition of his leadership and advocacy in advancing urban and community forestry efforts. The presentation was made on June 6 at the Oregon Community Trees (OCT) Conference by board president Allan Wells, who thanked Anderson for his past service on the 23-member volunteer board of directors that oversees urban forestry activities statewide.

According to an OCT news release, the 2013 awards “recognize powerful examples of inspirational individuals and organizations engaging citizens, promoting tree planting and quality tree care, raising awareness and knowledge about Oregon’s trees and forests, and protecting Oregon’s urban and community forests to improve the quality of life in towns and cities around the state.”

Wells called Anderson “a highly respected leader in the nursery industry,” noting that he is “recognized around the country as a savvy and tireless advocate for trees.”

Prior to becoming General Manager and Chief Operating Officer at the Schmidt nursery, Anderson managed Northwest Shade Trees, a 360-acre specimen B&B nursery located in Brooks, OR. A veteran of more than 30 years in the nursery industry, Anderson was a founding member and first President of the Oregon Garden Foundation, Silverton and a past president of the Oregon Association of Nurseries.
