Two uniquely columnar ornamental crabapples and a strikingly narrow Cornelian Cherry Dogwood are among nine new additions to the 2017-2018 Price Guide released by J. Frank Schmidt & Son Co. Offered exclusively by JFS, the three new introductions bring a new dimension to both species and expand the design palette for space-challenged landscapes.
Raspberry Spear Crabapple (Malus ‘JFS KW213MX) and Ivory Spear Crabapple (Malus ‘JFS KW214MX) are products of more than 30 years of in-house crabapple breeding, selection, evaluation and introduction. With names that reflect their remarkably narrow shapes, the pollinator-friendly trees also offer excellent disease resistance, brilliant flower display and profuse crops of persistent, brightly colored fruit. Raspberry Spear offers magenta blooms, purple foliage and small maroon fruits, while Ivory Spear blooms white, and presents green leave and bright red fruit.
Also pointing skyward is the striking Saffron Sentinel Cornelian Cherry (Cornus mas ‘JFS PN4Legacy’). Bright yellow blooms crowd its upright branches in early spring. Dark green summer foliage turns to deep crimson in autumn.
Pink Heartbreaker Redbud, Pink Pom Poms Redbud and Cinnamon Girl Maple are also new to the JFS product line, as is Chestnut Oak; named the 2017 Urban Tree of the Year by the Society of Municipal Arborists. All are described and pictured in the New Trees brochure, which has been mailed to Schmidt customers with the Price Guide.
